Blue Beans

It's So Sad...

I think I spoke too soon about the green beans being the ones to outlast everything else. I went out there to find one plant completely gone and the other looking like this!

Then last night I had a dream that I caught our neighbor's (nonexistent) bunny nibbling my veggies. I got to pet it. :3

I did see a few tiny sprouts nudging their heads up through the soil, though. There is still hope!! (Assuming they are not weeds, of course.)

The Ugliest Garden

Gotta Start Somewhere:

So, here it is! The beginning of my experimental garden (plus a bonus compost heap!). Haha, not much to look at, huh?

I wanted to get the few seedlings that survived the move into the ground as soon as possible. So a couple of days after we moved in, I busted out the shovel. I dug up a small section of grass, mixed in several pounds of used coffee grounds, and stuck two greenbean plants, a couple of butternut squash plants, and a couple of pepper plants into the ground. Then a few days later I stuck a bunch more seeds in in random places. lol! I'm hoping it will be like one of those square foot gardens, only much less organized.

I wanted to mix the dirt up better and make it all pretty with even rows, but... it turns out dirt is heavy. I got lazy after about an hour of digging and stirring.

I think if nothing else surives, the green beans will. They seemed to flourish through a 5 hour ride in the car, a week in an overly air conditioned hotel room, and a few days more on a concrete slab in the backyard.

Sweet, Sweet Lemons

A Sour Surprise:

So we're finally moved in to the new place and I have an internet connection again! Woohoo!

One bonus we got was a lemon tree in the backyard loaded with ripe fruit! Our neighbor says they aren't lemons, but I think they might be Meyer lemons. We picked all of the ones we could reach and I spent three days juicing them and freezing the juice. I think I must have mutilated 400-500 lemons in all. Lemonade all summer, baby!

Here's a picture of the last batch. There are more on the tree... but I think I'm over it. haha.
